Charting Jump, January 2019

Brand new Jump year, Brand new batch of Jump volumes.
Hey, I actually didn't skip a month this time. Not much to say for January since it was a relatively slow month overall, thankfully Neverland delivered a much need excitement to the data with its current volume and backlogs sales performance thanks to the anime.

You can read the overview for December here.

Chart for the table above

Overall, January was a weak month for JUMP with only 4 series that managed to chart, Kazuki Takahashi's sole volume for his short series "THE COMIQ" , both of the new series (David & Japan) & The final 2 volumes of Tanaka failed to chart even for a single week.

Before we take a go into more details for each of the new volumes, let's take a look at how the series did on the daily Shoseki rankings, this can give us a feels on how the volumes performed relatively to each other throughout the month of January.  You can check the raw data for the daily rankings here

We can see there is a significant divide between the series that charted, and the ones that didn't. Tanaka #2 & #3 both failed to rank for even a single day, David and Japan only managed to stay in the top 500 for about a week and The Comic holding out a little longer but ultimately unable to stay for a whole month.

Since the top 4 are too tightly packed together, here is a zoomed in view, for a better look at them.

Neverland #12 had a really good hold throughout the month and when we take a look at the backlogs later on, they were doing great as well, other than that, nothing really major happened in the rankingsSeries decline in positions day by day with minor bumps during the weekends (as per Jump usual) and dipped whenever a new batch of volumes were released from other labels and publishers.

With the overview done, time to take a closer look at each of the volumes

The Promised Neverland #12
Posuka really outdid herself with this cover, nothing more to say other than that it looks beautiful.

Jump latest anime is the big winner of January, being the only series with a significant growth VoV this time around. Neverland #12 sold over 40% from the total known sales of the recent batch of JUMP volumes. it is the first volume in the series to crack 400k within a month( it does it in just 3 weeks) and showed a 17% increase over #11 which had the same 3 days FW.

While TPN volume 12 itself had been great, the backlogs in general have been spectacular. with the series selling 1,061,246 in the span of 1 month (31/12/18 -27/01/19). You can also the see hype began way before the anime even premiered, with the backlogs starting picking up steam from before the year began and basically took over the daily rankings once EP01 premiered with even the much expensive box-set appearing in the top 100 and some anecdotal source claiming they were sold out.

Sales overview for all of The Promised Neverland volumes in January

Shoseki Daily rankings progressions for the TPN Volumes throughout January

Black Clover #19
The Silva family with Noelle at the center are focus of Volume 19's cover reflective of the chapters covered within the volume.

BC #19 started off really strong (probably due to the holiday season), showing a possibility of at least matching #15 performance, but as month went on, the volume started to match the performance of the  latest few volumes (namely #17 & #18), ending up just within a few thousand differences from them. BC seems to have plateaued in sales as of a late. It may need something (a movie?) to get more people excited and boost the sales.

Gintama #76
Gintoki completes the Yoruzuya trio post-time skip appearance on the cover of the penultimate(?) volume. Now I wonder what will be on the cover of the final(?) volume.

Gintama's penultimate(?) volume continues the trend of decline it had for a while now. It started slightly stronger (again, possibly due to the holidays), but it didn't pace as well and ultimately ended up lower than the past few volumes. Maybe the final(?) volume in April will give it one last push so it can end on a strong(er) note.

Bigger look at Gintama oricon overall sales

Kimetsu no Yaiba #14
Is it wrong for me to say that this almost have the same energy as the Black Clover volume? Anyway, Love Pillar, Kanjirou took center stage for the cover of of Volume 14

The cover is not the only place where BC and KnY shared the same energy, as with almost everything else, it had a very good first week but ended up not able to perform better than the previous volume. Even though it only managed to chart for 3 weeks, even if it had gotten the best possible sale on the 4th week it would still end up in between volume 12 & volume 13. That is in no way bad, just that from seeing the first week, some might had hoped it to do better.  The anime premiere is not far too off from now, with only a few more months to go, so if it could some get some percent of the boost shown by Neverland it would be great.

*Added the fifth week for Kimetsu on the line chart os it would be a better representation of the volume's performance

THE COMIQ, David-Kun #1, Jimoto ga Japan #1
Standard fare for all debut volumes, Showing the major character of the series (I would like to point out that David's cover is basically a re-drawn version of Chapter 1's Colour Page)

Grouping the three of these together since I've already talked about them on the overview section above. The debut volume for both David and Japan could have done better, but with how Japan is getting an anime this April, and with the recent survey of "do you want to see David animated?" we might be seeing them a bit longer.

THE COMIQ did performed slightly better than the both of them but is still nothing to write home about, It is hard to make out what was JUMP(& Shueisha) expecting for it to do but I personally think it was a decent mystery that needed a better resolution.

Tanaka Seiji #2 & #3 (END)
Goodbye Salaryman

Some claimed this might be the worst debut series in term of sales in recent JUMP history, and I say they wouldn't be far off in that assessment.I have practically no data to speak of it, so I'll just leave you with this, throughout all 3 volumes, Tanaka Seiji only ever ranked in the Shoseki top 500 once, the debut day for volume 1.

____

And that wraps up the JUMP comics sales overview for January 2019, I hope I can stay consistent and post the overview for February (that would make it 3 months in a row!).
February seems like it would be an interesting month in terms of sales, so here are a few things to keep an eye out in my opinion.
  • Can MHA sustain growth? will it finally reach 600k within a month or the late(r) anime will cause a small dip in sales?
  • Will Haikyuu maintain it current state or the  effect from the anime announcement can be seen already?
  • Boruto & Souma, will they continue their decline? reach a stable state? or start rising up again?
  • A Yuuna volume without a Limited Edition available at same time, can that help or the decline already too much?
  • Act-Graduation from the 30k club, and how mcuh has it grwon since the last volume if any?
  • Will Hinamaru be forever stuck in sales limbo?
  • Can We Never Learn reach 100k again? can it still grow or had reach it pre-anime peak?
  • Will the Shogakukan Award help boost sale for Dr. stone?
  • And most important of all, How much better will Alice & Sun do in comparison to Tanaka Seiji?
